2. RK Pachauri Harassment Case: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Resigns From TERI Governing Council

Indian entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has reportedly stepped down from the governing council of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), citing”moral responsibility” amid sexual harassment allegations against the climate think-tank’s director general RK Pachauri. She told The Economic Times that she “refused to be dragged in an extremely contentious issue” as she did not know enough about the issue. The governing council in TERI has been criticised for months for remaining largely mum about the harassment charges, even praising the climate scientist while skirting the issue. Even though Pachauri was recently replaced by Dr Ajay Mathur, he continues to operate as TERI DG until Mathur assumes charge later this year. Read More

Extending last week’s losing streak, the S&P BSE Sensex fell over 308.09 points, or 1.22 per cent, to break below the 25,000 mark to close at 24,893.81 on Monday, as high volatility in the late-afternoon session took its toll on an otherwise lacklustre session. But as the session progressed, the 30-share benchmark gave up all the gains to turn flat, before t .. Read More

1. Treatment-Resistant Lice? Now What? Lice. It can feel like a nightmare for many parents.

As a pediatrician, I often get a lot of questions about lice. And even more so lately, as parents have been worried about the treatment-resistant lice that was in the news. Recently a group of researchers in Illinois found that 25 states had lice that would resist over-the-counter treatments. Of the 109 lice populations tested, 104 were resistant to pyrethroids, the common chemical ingredients that are used in these shampoos. It seems that when an insecticide is used a lot, the lice’s genes mutate to resist the agents (this kind of mutation has also been found in house flies in the past). Read More

1. Not Just Another Discussion About Whether AI Is Going To Destroy Us

An AI roundtable discussion is a staple of the tech journalism circus — usually framed with a preamble about dystopic threats to human existence from the inexorable rise of ‘super intelligence machines’.
